A horticultural magic trick for the summer border, this fascinating shrub offers a unique multi-coloured display that never fails to spark conversation.
Living up to its nickname of the Joseph's Coat Spirea, it produces flat-topped clusters of flowers in three distinct shades—pure white, soft pink, and deep rose-red—all appearing simultaneously on the same plant. The blooms emerge in mid-summer against a backdrop of bright green, lance-shaped foliage, creating a cheerful, confetti-like effect.
'Genpei' forms a naturally rounded mound that is perfect for a low, informal hedge, edging a pathway, or filling a gap in the front of a mixed border. It is incredibly tough, unfussy about soil type, and fully hardy, thriving in sunny spots where the colours can really shine.
Barnsdale tip: To keep this shrub looking neat and to ensure the most vibrant display, treat it as a herbaceous perennial. Cut all the stems back hard to around 10–15cm (4–6 inches) from the ground in early spring; this encourages vigorous new growth that will be covered in flowers by summer.
June-August flowering. Grows best in full sun in most garden soils. Height & spread: 90cm x 60cm (36" x 24").
