A breathtaking and dramatic addition to the garden, Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Eva' (Syn. Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace') is highly celebrated for its striking, architectural appearance.
This magnificent deciduous shrub features deeply finely cut, lacy foliage that emerges a dark purple-black, bearing an uncanny resemblance to a delicate Japanese maple.
In early summer, the dark canopy is spectacularly transformed by the appearance of large, flat-topped clusters of musk-scented, creamy-pink flowers, creating a sensational colour contrast. These blooms are a magnet for pollinators and are followed in autumn by glossy black berries that are a favourite of garden birds. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, this fully hardy, robust shrub thrives in full sun for the deepest foliage colour and is highly adaptable to most soils.
Early summer flowering. Best in a sunny position in most garden soils. Height & spread: 6m x 6m (20' x 20') if not pruned hard in spring.

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant
This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
