A spectacular choice for brightening up a winter garden, this robust evergreen shrub is prized for its ability to provide vertical structure and a blaze of golden colour when days are short.

Unlike the more common red-berried varieties, this distinctive firethorn produces masses of spherical, bright yellow-gold berries that seem to glow against the glossy, dark green foliage. The display begins in spring with clusters of white, nectar-rich flowers that are a magnet for bees, followed by the spectacular fruit set that often persists well after Christmas.

It is a vigorous, thorny grower, reaching a substantial 3m if left unchecked, making it one of the finest plants for creating an intruder-proof security hedge or training flat against a wall or fence where space is tight. It is exceptionally hardy and unfussy, thriving in almost any soil and tolerating pollution, making it a reliable performer for urban and country gardens alike.

Barnsdale tip: While the berries are a vital food source for birds, they tend to leave these yellow ones until last, preferring red and orange fruits first. This is a bonus for the gardener, as it means your colourful display lasts significantly longer into the winter than other varieties.

March-April flowering. Evergreen. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most garden soils. Height & spread: 3m x 3m (10' x 10').
