A cheerful, fruity cocktail of colour for the front of a sunny border, this compact shrubby cinquefoil offers a refreshing twist on the traditional yellow varieties.

The saucer-shaped blooms are a delightful bicolour, featuring a rich, deep orange-red centre that melts into a golden-yellow margin. Held over a neat mound of small, grey-green leaves, the flowers appear in abundance from late spring right through to the first frosts, providing months of vibrant interest.

Reaching a manageable height and spread of just 60cm, it is an ideal choice for a rockery, the edge of a path, or a patio container. It is exceptionally tough and hardy, tolerating poor soils and drought once established, though the orange tones of the flowers are often most intense during cooler weather or in a spot that offers some relief from the scorching midday sun.

Barnsdale tip: Potentillas flower best on new growth made during the current season. To keep your plant bushy, vigorous, and covered in blooms, give it a "haircut" with garden shears in early spring (around mid-March), taking the top third of the growth off to stimulate fresh shoots.

May-September flowering. Drought resistant. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most garden soils. Height & spread: 60cm x 60cm (24" x 24").
