A marvel of metallic texture for the late summer garden, this compact sub-shrub offers a cooling haze of violet-blue just when the border needs a fresh perspective.
Unlike the taller, more sprawling varieties of Russian Sage which often require staking, this modern selection has a robust, upright habit that keeps it neat and tidy without support. The stiff, silver-white stems are clothed in finely cut, aromatic grey foliage that releases a sage-like scent when brushed against.
From August well into autumn, the plant is enveloped in airy panicles of lavender-blue flowers that seem to float above the leaves, creating a shimmering effect in the low afternoon light. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor, chalky, or sandy soils where other plants might struggle, making it perfect for gravel gardens or a sunny, baking corner.
Barnsdale tip: Resist the urge to tidy up this plant before winter. The skeletal silver stems look spectacular when frosted, and leaving them intact protects the crown from rot; wait until new buds appear low down in mid-spring before cutting the old stems back hard to around 10-15cm.
August-September flowering. Best when grown in a sunny and well-drained position. Height & spread: 60cm x 45cm (24" x 18").
