A structural masterpiece for the modern garden, this dramatic switch grass is prized for its rigid verticality and distinct metallic colouring.
Living up to its name, the flat, strap-like leaves are a cool, steely blue-grey that stands out sharply against the softer greens of the border. Unlike many other grasses that tend to flop or arch over, this variety maintains a strictly upright, columnar habit throughout the season, creating a strong architectural silhouette that withstands wind and rain.
In autumn, the clump is topped by delicate, airy panicles of pink-tinged flowers that hover like a cloud above the foliage. As autumn approaches, the blue tones mellow into a warm golden-yellow, fading to a persistent beige that provides valuable interest right through the winter months. It thrives in full sun and is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established.
Barnsdale tip: Resist the urge to tidy this plant up before winter. The skeletal stems look spectacular when frosted, and they provide vital shelter for insects; wait until mid-spring to cut the old growth back to the ground, just before the new shoots emerge.
August-October flowering. Drought tolerant. Best in a sunny position in most garden soils. Height & spread: 1.5m x 1m (4' x 3').
