A champion problem-solver for the most difficult parts of the garden, this refined Japanese Spurge is widely regarded as the ultimate ground cover for deep, dry shade.
As the name suggests, this improved plant forms a lower, denser, and more uniform mat than the common species. The glossy, coarsely toothed leaves are a rich, emerald green and arranged in neat rosettes, creating a lush, weed-suppressing carpet that looks immaculate all year round.
In early summer, it produces small, upright spikes of tiny white flowers, but its true value lies in its foliage and its ability to thrive where grass struggles to survive. It is the perfect candidate for planting under the canopy of large trees or on shady banks, where it spreads slowly but surely to green up the bare earth.
Barnsdale tip: While it is low maintenance, this plant benefits from a little "haircut" to keep it looking dense and velvety. If the carpet starts to look a bit uneven or leggy, shear the tops of the plants lightly with garden shears in early spring to encourage fresh, bushy new growth.
June flowering. Evergreen. Will grow in shade or semi-shade in most soil types. Height & spread: 15cm (6") x indefinite spread.
