A charmingly compact twist on a native meadow favourite, this damp-loving perennial brings soft, airy texture to the front of the border without the unruly habit of its wild cousin.
Unlike the traditional Ragged Robin which can be a little sprawling, this modern dwarf variety maintains a neat, upright form while producing clouds of double, lavender-pink blooms. The flowers, with their distinctive deeply frayed petals, appear in profusion from May right through to July, hovering above mounds of fresh green, lance-shaped leaves.
It is completely at home in boggy ground or at the water's edge, but is equally happy in a standard border or container provided the soil keeps some moisture. Its nectar-rich blossoms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly garden where space is at a premium.
Barnsdale tip: To encourage a second flush of flowers later in the season, cut the flowered stems back close to the ground once the initial display begins to look tired. This rejuvenates the foliage and often prompts a fresh wave of colour in early autumn.
Summer flowering. Best in a sunny position in moist, well-drained soil. Height & spread: 36cm x 45cm (15" x 18").
