A superb solution for tricky, shaded spots, this tough evergreen perennial brings valuable late-season colour and structure where many other plants fail to thrive.

Forming a dense, weed-suppressing clump of arching, dark green strap-like leaves, it looks good all year round, but really comes into its own as summer fades. From late August into November, it sends up upright spikes of vibrant violet-purple flowers that resemble Grape Hyacinths, offering a welcome splash of colour when the rest of the garden is winding down.

Reaching a neat height of around 30–45cm, it is perfect for edging a shady path, underplanting trees, or filling a difficult corner where dry shade is an issue. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance, making it a true 'plant and forget' hero for busy gardeners.

Barnsdale tip: To keep the display looking fresh, give the plant a 'haircut' in early spring. Cut the old, tired foliage down to the ground before the new shoots emerge to ensure the fresh green leaves and flowers aren't hidden by last year's tatty growth.

Peat-free plant

This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
