A pocket-sized powerhouse for the front of the border, this dwarf poker delivers all the fiery impact of its larger cousins without demanding the space.

True to its name, it launches a relentless succession of conical flower spikes that start as a deep, intense red-orange before maturing to a warm golden-yellow, creating a vibrant two-tone effect. It is significantly more compact than traditional varieties, forming a tidy, grassy mound that won't flop or look unruly.

It is an exceptional performer for patio containers or rockeries, where it blooms continuously from early summer right through to the first frosts. Its nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for bees and, despite its small stature, it makes a robust and colourful cut flower for small posies.

Barnsdale tip: Like all pokers, this variety hates having "wet feet" in winter. To protect the crown, gather the grassy foliage up in late autumn and tie it loosely together with twine to form a protective tent over the centre of the plant, then cut it all back in spring once the new growth appears.

June-October flowering. Drought tolerant. Grows best in full sun in any well-drained soil. Height & spread: 50cm x 50cm (20" x 20").

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant

This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
