A rare and valuable find for the vertical garden, this magnificent evergreen climber solves the problem of bare north-facing walls looking bleak in winter.

Unlike the common climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) which loses its leaves, this Mexican species is clothed year-round in handsome, leathery, dark green foliage. In summer, the display is enhanced by heavy, greenish-white lacecap flowers that emerge from large, decorative buds.

It is self-clinging, using aerial roots to attach itself firmly to masonry or fencing without the need for trellis, making it an excellent choice for covering a sheltered house wall or a sturdy fence in partial shade. While it is robust once established, it hails from a warmer climate and appreciates a spot protected from biting cold winds.

Barnsdale tip: Patience is the key with this plant. It can be very slow to get going in its first couple of years, often sitting still while it establishes a root system. Don't panic and don't force it with too much feed; just keep it well-watered and it will eventually take off.

Summer flowering. Evergreen. Will grow in sun or shade in most soil types. 10m (35').
