A commanding presence for the shade garden, this majestic variety stands as one of the largest and finest blue-leaved hostas available, bringing an instantly mature, tropical look to difficult corners.

The real spectacle lies in its colossal, thick leaves, which form a magnificent, symmetrical mound up to a metre high and nearly two metres across. Each deeply crinkled leaf is a rich, slate-blue with a heavy waxy coating that enhances its intense, cool colouring and helps provide excellent natural resistance against slug damage.

In mid-summer, sturdy stems rise just above the dense canopy, carrying dense clusters of pale, near-white lavender flowers that create a beautiful contrast with the moody foliage. It is an enduringly hardy perennial that is perfect for underplanting mature trees, filling a damp woodland border, or creating a massive, architectural statement in a large patio pot.

Barnsdale tip: To maintain that flawless, waxy blue coating on the leaves, choose a spot protected from both the hot midday sun and harsh overhead wind. Direct, burning sunlight or heavy friction can strip away the delicate wax, turning the foliage a standard green rather than its signature powdery blue.

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant

This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
