With a name that perfectly captures its enduring elegance, this variety is highly valued for its striking, near-black foliage that creates a dramatic contrast in any border.

The glossy leaves are a deep, rich plum-purple, almost ebony, that remains crisp and dark throughout the season without fading. From late spring well into summer, it sends up slender stems topped with airy sprays of clear, rosy-pink flowers that seem to float above the dark mound of foliage.

Reaching a compact height of around 25–30 cm (with flower spikes rising to 50 cm), it keeps a neat, tidy habit that is perfect for edging paths or filling containers. It's a robust and hardy choice that thrives in both sun and partial shade, provided the soil is well-drained and not waterlogged in winter.

Barnsdale tip: Remove faded flower stems and any weathered leaves in early spring to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage vigorous new growth.
