A classic cottage garden stalwart that has reliably anchored late-summer borders for decades, this enduring perennial is celebrated for its shifting palette of deep, coppery red tones.
As the high summer flowers begin to tire, the sturdy, branching stems of this traditional sneezeweed rise to around a metre in height, topped with distinctively skirted petals that reflex downwards from a dark, velvety central cone. The blossoms open in a deep mahogany-crimson, gradually mellowing to warm shades of burnt orange and amber as they age, creating a rich tapestry of autumn colour on a single plant.
It is exceptionally robust and fully hardy, coping well with exposed sites provided the roots remain in fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Its nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly spaces.
Barnsdale tip: Because this variety grows much taller than its compact modern cousins, it benefits from the 'Chelsea Chop' in late May. Cutting back the front stems by a third delays their flowering slightly and keeps the clump sturdier, preventing the need for staking later in the year.

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant
This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
