The ultimate architectural statement for the exotic garden, this award-winning ginger lily brings a taste of the tropics to British borders.

Towering stems reach up to 1.5–2.4m, clothed in huge, glossy, paddle-shaped leaves that provide spectacular lushness from mid-summer onwards. In late summer and autumn, the foliage is crowned by magnificent, dense spikes of lemon-yellow flowers, each accented with flamboyant red stamens.

The blooms release a powerful, sweet fragrance, especially in the evening, making it a sensory delight for a sheltered patio or courtyard. While it is hardy enough to survive outdoors in mild areas with a deep dry mulch, it thrives best when given a warm, sheltered spot to encourage late-season flowering.

Barnsdale tip: Treat this plant to 'monsoon conditions' during the growing season. It is a hungry and thirsty giant, so water copiously and feed heavily during the summer months to fuel those impressive flower spikes—but keep it drier in winter to prevent the rhizomes from rotting.

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant

This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
