A superb option for creating a tight, weed-suppressing carpet of colour along the edge of a path, this compact bloody cranesbill offers an exceptionally neat habit and a remarkably long season of interest.
Unlike more sprawling geraniums that can quickly invade their neighbours, this tidy selection forms a dense, symmetrical mound of finely divided, dark green foliage that stays low to the ground. From early summer right through to the arrival of autumn, the plant is studded with a continuous succession of large, saucer-shaped flowers in a vibrant shade of deep magenta-pink.
The deeply lobed leaves provide an excellent texture contrast throughout the growing season before turning fiery shades of orange and red as temperatures drop. It is incredibly robust, thriving in full sun or partial shade, and adapting easily to poor, stony, or alkaline soils where other perennials might struggle.
Barnsdale tip: This native variant is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, making it perfect for gravel gardens or dry sunny banks. Avoid over-feeding with nitrogen-rich fertilisers, as too much rich food will encourage leafy growth at the expense of those wonderful magenta blooms.
May-September flowering. Drought tolerant. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most garden soils. Height & spread: 25cm x 30cm (10" x 12").
