A magnificent architectural statement for the garden, this exotic-looking evergreen shrub brings a lush, tropical drama to the landscape while remaining completely hardy in the British climate.
The primary feature is its dramatic foliage; the massive, glossy, deeply lobed leaves can measure up to 40cm across, reflecting light into dull corners and looking pristine through all four seasons. In the chilling months of October and November, when most plants are fast asleep, it produces striking, ball-like clusters of creamy-white flowers on thick stems, providing a vital late nectar source for lingering pollinators.
The flowers are followed by attractive, globose black berries that persist into winter. It handles the open ground or a large container with ease, thriving in a sheltered spot away from drying winds, and proving particularly useful for transforming tricky urban spaces or woodland beds.
Barnsdale tip: To help it settle in, simply mulch the base with well-rotted manure or garden compost after planting and in spring to lock in moisture. Simply cut away any individual leaves that look tired or wind-damaged in mid-spring to keep the canopy looking immaculate. If it eventually outgrows its space, it responds well to being chopped back hard in April, rapidly shooting from the old wood to form a dense, fresh framework.
September-November flowering. Evergreen. Grows best in shade or
semi-shade and well-drained soil. Height & spread: 1.5m-3m x 1.5m-4m (5'-12' x 5'-12').

Peat-free plant
This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
