A tirelessly reliable evergreen that brightens up the garden in every season, this versatile shrub is a staple for adding permanent structure and light to dull corners.
The small, rounded leaves are a deep, glossy green, boldly edged with a crisp, creamy-white margin that remains fresh and vibrant all year round. As temperatures drop in winter, the white variegation often takes on a delightful pinkish-red blush, adding warmth to the frozen landscape.
'Emerald Gaiety' is incredibly adaptable in its habit: grown in the open, it forms a low, bushy mound perfect for ground cover or a low hedge; planted against a wall or fence, it will climb upwards to act as a wall shrub, where it can be trained to reach 1.8m (6ft). It thrives in almost any soil or aspect, from full sun to deep shade, making it one of the most useful problem-solvers in the catalogue.
Barnsdale tip: Like many variegated plants, it can occasionally produce shoots that are solid green (known as reversion). Keep an eye out for these vigorous, plain shoots and prune them out right at the base as soon as you spot them, otherwise, they can eventually take over the whole plant.
