A striking architectural presence for the mid-border, this vibrant sea holly is prized for the intensity of its colouring, which saturates not just the flower heads but the upper stems in a vivid, metallic blue.
Unlike taller, floppier varieties, this compact selection reaches a manageable height, holding its thimble-like flower cones on stiff, branched stems that require no staking. Each flower head is surrounded by a distinctive 'ruff' of long, spiny bracts that catch the light beautifully, contrasting sharply with the mound of deeply divided, dark green foliage below.
It is a magnet for bees and butterflies in high summer and stands up well to dry conditions, making it an excellent candidate for gravel gardens or south-facing borders. While it thrives in full sun, the drainage must be sharp; it will not tolerate sitting in cold, waterlogged soil over winter.
Barnsdale tip: These plants put down a deep taproot, which makes them very drought tolerant but also means they resent being moved. Choose your planting spot carefully, as they are best left undisturbed once established to form a substantial clump.
Summer flowering. Drought tolerant. Best in a sunny and well-drained position. Height & spread: 60cm x 60cm (24" x 24").
