A classic choice for adding precise geometric detail and deep colour to the late summer border, this hard-working pompon dahlia produces an abundance of perfectly formed blooms over many months.

The dense, tightly balled flowers are a rich shade of reddish-purple or deep magenta, with neatly furled petals that create an intricate, honeycombed appearance. Held on strong, wiry stems well above neat mounds of dark green foliage, these compact blooms, 5cm across, are remarkably resilient against wet weather, making them an excellent choice for the unpredictable British autumn.

The plant has a bushy, self-supporting habit that works beautifully in the middle of a cottage garden bed or within a large patio container. It flowers tirelessly from midsummer until the first hard frosts, providing a reliable source of late-season structure and excellent material for the cutting garden.

Barnsdale tip: To secure the largest and most perfectly formed pompon shapes, thin out some of the side shoots as the plant grows, leaving around five or six main flowering stems. Keep up with deadheading by cutting the spent stems right back to a leaf joint to stimulate a constant supply of new buds.

As perishable goods, live plants cannot be returned.

Peat-free plant

This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
