A spectacular injection of warmth for the darkest months of the year, this sensational dogwood is widely regarded as one of the finest shrubs for winter colour.

While the summer foliage is a pleasant, soft green that turns lovely shades of golden-orange in autumn, the real magic happens when the leaves fall. The bare winter stems reveal an extraordinary, luminous gradient of colour, starting with a bright yellow base that transitions into fiery orange and finishes with brilliant, crimson-red tips, creating the illusion of flickering flames.

It forms a dense, twiggy thicket that looks breathtaking when backlit by low winter sun or planted in large drifts. Completely hardy and reliable, it handles a wide range of soil types well, making it a stellar addition to any mixed border planting.

Barnsdale tip: To secure that legendary, bright stem colour year after year, you must prune it regularly, as the youngest wood holds the most vibrant pigment. In late March, just as the buds begin to swell, hard-prune the entire shrub back to a low, permanent framework around 10–15cm from the ground, and apply a generous mulch of garden compost around the base to fuel the vigorous new growth.

Late spring-early summer flowering. Best in a sunny position in most garden soils. Height & spread: 3m x 2.5m (10' x 8').
