Few climbing plants can match the velvety richness and the dramatic, jewel-toned impact that this outstanding variety brings to a vertical space.
Forming a vigorous, scrambling framework of fresh green leaves, Clematis 'Rouge Cardinal' is highly coveted for its deep, opulent colour and exceptionally free-flowering nature.
From mid-summer right through to early autumn, it produces a non-stop profusion of large, satin-textured flowers in a striking shade of deep crimson-purple, beautifully accented by a prominent centre of contrasting creamy-brown anthers.
This hardy climber is an absolute favourite for clothing fences, climbing over arbours, or scrambling through obelisks in a mixed border.
June-September flowering. Does best in a sunny position but will grow in semi-shade in moist, well-drained soil, preferring its roots to be kept cool and shaded. Height & spread: 1.8m-3.7m x 90cm-120cm (6'-12' x 3'-4').

Peat-free plant
This plant has been grown in peat-free compost. The compost we use at Barnsdale Gardens is mainly wood-based, mixed with some coir, with an eight to nine months slow-release fertiliser added. We have been using this compost to pot all the plants we grow for over ten years.
