With its shimmering metallic foliage and late-season blooms, this compact shrub is perfect for extending interest into autumn.
Unlike standard forms with duller grey-green leaves, this variety boasts intense silver foliage that gleams in the sunlight, offering a cool counterpoint to hotter colours. In late summer, just as the rest of the garden begins to tire, it produces clusters of rich blue flowers that bees find absolutely irresistible.
It forms a neat, rounded mound, making it ideal for the front of a sunny border or a container on the patio where you can brush against its aromatic leaves. To thrive, it demands excellent drainage and plenty of sun; it is perfectly at home in a gravel garden or Mediterranean scheme. Once established, it tolerates drought well, proving itself to be a tough and resilient performer despite its delicate appearance.
Barnsdale tip: Prune the stems back hard in early spring, cutting down to low buds, to encourage vigorous new silver growth and ensure a better flowering display later in the year.
