A strikingly dramatic evergreen sedge that brings intense, moody texture to the garden all year round, this compact perennial is celebrated for its deep, glossy colouring.
Forming a neat, arching tuft of narrow leaves, the foliage emerges in shades of bright copper-bronze before maturing to a rich, dark mahogany-red that appears to glow when backlit by the low winter sun. In mid-summer, it produces slender, dark brown to black flower spikes that feature tiny hooks, giving it its common name of Red Hook Sedge.
Reaching a compact height of just 25–30cm, it is an exceptional choice for adding sharp contemporary structure to patio containers, rockeries, or the front of a sheltered border. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, where its reflective leaves create a brilliant contrast against green ferns or silver foliage.
Barnsdale tip: This New Zealand native prefers a sheltered spot and can struggle in a waterlogged, freezing winter. Plant it in a free-draining soil mix and rather than cutting the plant back, simply comb through the tuft with your gloved fingers in spring to clear out any dead or tatty leaves.
Summer flowering. Evergreen. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most garden soils. Height & spread: 30cm x 35cm (12" x 14").
