Bringing a magnificent soft haze to the midsummer border, this reliable old favourite is outstanding for adding both height and soft colour to a traditional planting scheme.
The plant produces large, dome-shaped clusters of milky-blue, bell-shaped flowers that open from violet buds, creating a lovely two-tone effect throughout summer- to autumn. It forms a substantial, upright clump of sturdy stems clothed in narrow, fresh green foliage. Unlike some taller bellflowers that can look untidy, this variety maintains a clean, architectural habit that sits beautifully in a cottage garden or naturalistic border.
It is a long-lived and dependable perennial that performs best in a spot where it can get its head into the sun while keeping its roots reasonably cool and damp.
Barnsdale tip: Chop the stems back by half in late May—a technique often called the Chelsea Chop—to produce a shorter, sturdier plant that will not need staking and will flower slightly later in the summer.
