An elegant choice for naturalising in damp meadows or borders, this robust bulbous perennial brings a cool wave of soft, wisteria-blue to the late spring garden.
Emerging before many summer perennials have woken up, it sends up tall, stately spikes packed with dozens of starry, pale blue flowers, each accented by delicate yellow anthers. The blooms open sequentially from the bottom up, providing a long-lasting display that bridges the gap between early spring bulbs and high-summer perennials.
The sturdy stems rise from a handsome rosette of wide, strap-like, grey-green leaves. Unlike many traditional bulbs that demand sharp drainage, this tough species is entirely at home in heavy clay and moist soils, making it perfect for damp borders, pond edges, or open orchard grass.
Barnsdale tip: To create the most natural look, drift these bulbs in large groups rather than planting them in neat rows. Once they finish flowering, allow the foliage to die back completely before cutting it down; this allows the bulb to store energy for an even bigger display next spring.
May-June flowering. Best in a sunny position with a moisture retentive soil. Height & spread: 100cmx 30cm (36" x 12").
