A standout choice for adding depth and richness to the summer border, this masterwort is celebrated for the intensity of its dark, jewel-like blooms.
Often considered one of the finest red varieties, it produces pincushion-like flower heads in a deep, lustrous shade of crimson-plum, surrounded by a ruff of stiff, papery bracts that are tipped with the same rich colour. These intricate blooms are held high on wiry, branched stems above a neat clump of deeply lobed, dark green foliage from early summer often right through to early autumn.
It's perfect for the middle of a moist border or dappled woodland edge. It is a tireless performer that pairs beautifully with pale pinks or cool blues and makes an exceptional, long-lasting cut flower.
Barnsdale tip: Astrantias are thirsty plants that will suffer if the soil dries out completely. To keep the foliage lush and the flowers coming, mulch generously with organic matter in spring to lock in moisture, and don't be afraid to cut the whole plant back hard in mid-summer if it starts to look tired—it will flush again with fresh leaves and blooms.
May-October flowering. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in most soil types. Height & spread: 75cm x 24cm (30" x 24").
