The finely divided leaves are a striking silvery-grey, providing a cool, elegant backdrop that makes the colours of neighbouring plants truly pop. It forms a dense, rounded mound that remains attractive from spring right through the winter months, releasing a pleasant herbal scent whenever you brush past.
It thrives in poor, well-drained soils and is highly resilient against summer droughts, making it a dependable choice for gravel gardens or coastal locations. Unlike some of its unruly cousins, it keeps a well-behaved, non-invasive habit, though it rarely produces flowers—a benefit for those who value its foliage above all else.
Barnsdale tip: Prune the plant back hard in mid-spring, just as new growth begins at the base, to prevent the branches from becoming woody and splitting open.
