Distinguished from its spring-flowering cousins by its later season and impeccable manners, this compact ornamental onion is invaluable for injecting vibrant colour into the midsummer border.

Beginning in July and continuing well into August, it produces a profusion of rounded, rose-purple flower heads that stand on sturdy, upright stems. Unlike many alliums that leave behind tatty, dying leaves just as they bloom, this variety retains its glossy, deep green foliage throughout the season, making it an excellent candidate for the very front of a border or a container display.

It forms a tight, non-invasive clump that gradually expands, offering a reliable splash of colour when many herbaceous plants are starting to look tired. It is a magnet for bees and butterflies and thrives in open, sunny spots with well-drained soil, showing remarkable drought tolerance once established.

Barnsdale tip: Divide congested clumps every three to four years in spring; this invigorates the plant and provides you with plenty of extra sections to repeat the colour through your borders.

July-September flowering. Drought tolerant. Best in a sunny and well drained position. Height & spread: 35cm x 20cm (14" x 8").
