A magnificent architectural masterpiece for the late-season shade garden, this award-winning bugbane introduces a dark, dramatic presence and an unforgettable fragrance to the autumn border.

The deeply divided, fern-like foliage emerges in spring as a rich bronze-green before deepening into a sumptuous, glossy purplish-black that remains immaculate all summer long. In late summer, as most other perennials are fading, tall, dark stems rise high above the mound to carry stately, arching bottlebrush flower spikes.

The pale pink-tinged white blossoms open from pearly buds, creating an electric contrast against the near-black foliage while filling the cooling autumn air with a powerful, sweet perfume reminiscent of wild strawberries. Reaching a commanding height of around 1.2–1.5m, it is perfect for adding vertical structure to the back of a woodland bed or a north-facing border.

Barnsdale tip: This woodland giant absolutely detests dry conditions and its magnificent dark leaves will scorch at the edges if it lacks moisture. Plant it in a sheltered, partially shaded spot out of the midday sun, and incorporate a generous amount of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter into the planting hole to help lock in moisture.

August-October flowering. Will grow in sun or semi-shade in a moisture retentive soil. Height & spread: 150cm x 60cm (5' x 2').
