A vibrant cottage garden classic, this cheerful yarrow is celebrated for its ability to inject a bold pop of colour into sunny borders while requiring very little fuss.
The large, flat-topped flower heads are a vivid cherry-pink, sometimes fading to softer magenta and pale white as they age, creating a lovely multi-tonal effect across the plant. These striking plates of colour float above a mat of aromatic, feathery green foliage that looks delicate but is tough enough to withstand hot, dry summers.
Growing to around 60cm, it sits comfortably in the middle of a bed, where its horizontal flower shape provides a perfect contrast to the vertical spikes of salvias or veronicas. It is an absolute magnet for hoverflies and butterflies, and the long, sturdy stems make it an excellent choice for fresh or dried cut flower arrangements.
Barnsdale tip: This plant is a vigorous grower but can become woody and less floriferous if left untouched for too long. To keep it youthful and full of vigour, dig up and divide the clumps every three years in spring, discarding the old woody centres and replanting the fresh outer sections.
May-August flowering. Best in a sunny and well drained position. Height & spread: 60cm x 60cm (24" x 24").
