Stiga SBC 900 D AE Cordless Grass Trimmer - Brush Cutter
This is the first time I’ve used a professional level battery powered strimmer and I really was impressed!
So, first things first - the strimmer unit itself appears really well made, it’s got a quality, robust, well-designed feel as have all the Stiga products I’ve handled.
The strimmer weighs 6kg which is good considering that equivalent petrol machines weigh 8-10kg. Bear in mind that the bulk of the weight is in the batteries which fit into a backpack harness. The strimmer is also supported from the harness with a simple clip attachment. Power is delivered through a strong cable which connects the strimmer to the battery harness.

What I really like about this is that it’s very quiet compared to petrol engine machines, meaning I can use it during the day without upsetting the the tranquillity of the gardens, there are also no exhaust fumes or engine heat to deal with, so a win-win.
This has bike handles with the power trigger on the right side. There’s a handy battery level indicator LED so you can always see what’s left in each battery, the handles fold flat and can rotate for easy storage, so it sits neatly against my shed wall.
There is a brush cutter blade available for more dense vegetation but I found the standard strimmer head to be more than capable on long grass and weeds.
The strimmer head features the 'Bump and Work' system for quick line feeding without having to stop work (holds approximately three metres of line).
Power-wise it has everything I need and the speed is controlled with a very responsive trigger; I can strim precisely at low speeds around plants and obstacles, then quickly be at full speed for the bigger areas.
Battery life: I use three of the E475 Li-ion batteries - the battery harness holds two - I found that each one gives a minimum run time of seventy minutes at full speed though lower speeds equal longer run time.
Conclusion: I really would recommend this strimmer; for large gardens it has more than enough capability. More batteries would provide a longer running time or alternatively take a break whilst the batteries recharge (the dual charger will fully charge two batteries in 330 minutes).
