A standout choice for injecting intense, royal blue colour into the garden just as the summer display begins to tire, this improved Bluebeard is superior to many older varieties.
True to its name, it produces masses of deep, rich blue flower spikes that are significantly darker and more vibrant than the pale, washy blues of traditional forms. The blooms appear in clusters along the stems from late summer, well into autumn, creating a striking contrast against the neat mound of aromatic, grey-green foliage.
It forms a tight, bushy shrub that is perfect for a sunny mixed border, a gravel garden, or a large patio pot. It's a magnet for late-flying bees and butterflies and, once established, thrives in hot, dry conditions where other plants might flag.
Barnsdale tip: This sub-shrub flowers best on new wood grown during the current season. To keep it neat, vigorous, and packed with flowers, cut all the stems back hard to within 10–15cm of the ground in late spring (around April), just as the buds begin to swell.
