Gardena AquaZoom Compact Oscillating Sprinkler

With the recent weather being so warm it couldn’t be a better time to review a sprinkler.

Having used various Gardena irrigation products over the years I’ve found them to be reliable, well designed and very user-friendly.

For the main gardens at Barnsdale I have large rotating sprinklers which are ideal for covering areas during the summer months where precision is less important, when everything needs water.

On the allotment we like to be able to irrigate individual areas where certain crops require it, also our main pathway for visitors runs right through the middle of the plots so to avoid giving them an unwanted shower we need to be precise. Of course this sprinkler can be used anywhere in a garden such as lawns, beds and borders.

First impressions:
The sprinkler comes with a 5 year warranty and is resistant to UV and frost. Out of the box it comes in two pieces, the base and the sprinkler, it’s very simple to connect the two together. The overall height is about 19cm and only 27cm across, it’s roughly circular in shape. Initially, I thought that the sprinkler head would rotate because of the circular base but it doesn’t, the head oscillates back and forth and the base is this shape to give good stability on the ground. The connector for the hose is the push and click system, the sprinkler has the male fitting and it’s fairly standard for hoses to have female connector.

Usage:
Once the sprinkler is connected there are options for setting the area to be covered:
the 16 nozzles are split down the centre of the head and on each side of the head there is a slider which allows each side to be moved in or out, this gives control over the spray width from 3-12 metres. The range or length of coverage is controlled by rotating two other sliders to give a spray from 3-18 metres. This give an impressive total coverage area of 9-216 square metres.

At Barnsdale Gardens we do have very good water pressure so we can achieve maximum range, of course a lesser pressure will give less range.

A couple of other features I really found useful:
The water flow-rate can be increased or reduced by turning a small dial, which saves turning the mains tap higher or lower. If a different water source is being used such as a water-butt pump it allows for the pressure to be controlled.
The sprinkler has a removable filter which can easily be removed and cleaned, again if using a water source other than mains it means than any debris won’t clog up or affect the nozzles.
There’s a removable cap on the sprinkler so that, if desired, another length of hose can be added to join another sprinkler.

Verdict:
The sprinkler is compact, easy to set up and gives good even coverage without wasting water. The compact size means it fits easily inbetween vegetable rows or plants in a border and it's equally unobtrusive sat on a lawn. It’s very stable and won’t fall over.

I particularly like the easy-clean removable filter, which is useful if you are drawing water from a water butt where dirt or small particles may be present. The slide switch on the jets also makes it easy to widen or narrow the spray pattern, giving you good control over the area being watered.

Conclusion:
For smaller to medium areas, it is a simple and effective sprinkler, I’ve no doubt it’ll be in regular use throughout the summer at Barnsdale Gardens.
