9-inch Deck and Scrubbing Brush - RHS Endorsed: £14.99
Tested June 2024
This brush is intended for scrubbing and cleaning, not just for sweeping. We have many different surfaces to clean at Barnsdale Gardens, so I was eager to give this a go.
It’s a lightweight but sturdy brush; the overall length is 130cm with a head width of 23cm. The handle and head are made from hardwood & the head comes attached to the handle with a recyclable fastener but not assembled – sounds confusing, it just means that they need to be put together by the user; they connect together with threaded plastic connectors which are intended to be removed and recycled at the end of the brushes life.
The bristles are short and sturdy and made from bassine, which is a natural material made from the coarse leaf fibres of the Palmyra palm (Borassus), it's very hard-wearing and well-suited to scrubbing.
I used the brush to give some decking a good clean, then I had a go at some slabs which had a combination of green algae and dried pigeon droppings. I wet both areas first to soften the dirt then had a good scrub with the brush before rinsing off. I was impressed with the results.
Conclusion: I think the brush is ideal for clearing day to day mess from dirty garden areas; it won’t give the same results as a pressure washer but for general dirt it cleans much better than a standard broom. The handle also has a leather hanging loop for tidy storage.
