Rakes come in many shapes and sizes and they’re designed with different uses in mind; I’ve used a vast amount of different rakes over the years at Barnsdale, this one from Burgon & Ball is a lawn rake and it's intended for removing grass clippings, dead grass, debris and moss (thatch) as well as autumn leaves.
First, the rake has a 25 year guarantee and it certainly looks and feels like a quality tool - the finish is very smooth with no rough or sharp edges, the wooden white ash shaft (FSC certified) has been selected for its strength and shock absorbing qualities. The flat head is green powder-coated and consists of 20 flexible tines made of Boron steel (80% recycled). The Boron steel claims to be stronger, more durable and tougher, without dramatically increasing the weight.
The overall weight is 1.27 kg, length 166cm with a head width of 44cm,
The rake felt quite heavy but not in a bad way, more of a built-to-last, quality kind of weight. The length felt just about right for me and the narrow head was well suited to raking leaves out of borders, in between shrubs and other plants. As for raking out thatch, it did a super job, I was surprised at how much it pulled out without too much effort. When raking up autumn leaves from a lawn it worked well but I wouldn’t buy it specifically for this job, the narrow head isn’t best suited for large scale leaf clearing and I’d rather use a lighter rake with a wide plastic head.
Conclusion: All in all I think this is a really good and solid rake; for the average sized garden it would be perfect and it feels as if it will last a lifetime.
