If there’s one job that can really make a difference to the appearance of a lawn and surrounding borders its lawn edging. Throughout the growing season the edge is kept in order with edging shears but to achieve a good edge to shear along it must first be created or cut with a lawn edger (half moon).
My first impressions of the Burgon & Ball BoronGreen Lawn Edger are that it’s quite a long and thin edger compared to others that I’ve used and the T-shaped handle is also very wide at 28cm, this is in no way a negative though; the long shaft means less stooping so it’s comfortable to use, the handle grip is smooth and rounded, so it’s comfortable and the extra width makes for better control.
Its weight feels perfect and in spite of the thin nature of the wooden shaft and handle it feels adequately robust.
The soil at Barnsdale is renowned for being very heavy clay, it also has its fair share of limestone mixed in so our ground tools need to be strong.
I tested this edger to cut a new edge near the allotment and it was a pleasure to use.
The ground was quite wet so the clay did stick to the blade but that would still happen with stainless steel or other non-stick coatings – ideally I’d only edge when the soil isn’t sticky.
I think that the powder coating on the blade will eventually wear away but that doesn’t matter if its kept clean after use it will do the job perfectly well and a little rust won’t impact its function.
Conclusion: I think this is a great lawn edger and I’d recommend it, if cleaned after every use and stored in a dry place it should give many years of service.
