I have never measured the amount of lawn edges we have at Barnsdale Gardens but I suspect it to be miles. I’ve used many different brands over the years but not Burgon and Ball so it has been interesting to see how these perform.
The packaging quote says, 'Ultra lightweight long handled shears to create the crispest of lawn edges with minimal effort and strain'. I had high hopes for these, being RHS endorsed with a 10 year guarantee - I’m not sure how the guarantee works as we probably cut more edges in a year than most would cut in 10 years.
The shears have lightweight extra long aluminium handle shafts (90cm long), the overall length, including blades, is 99cm. The handles have rubber grips which makes them comfortable to hold.
The hardened and tempered, razor-sharp blades, are made from high-carbon steel for maximum edge retention and long lasting sharpness, they also have chromed and coated surfaces for rust resistance.
The shears weigh 1.6kg which is about average when compared to similar shears from other brands.
They really do cut well and give a smart crisp finish. They’re a good length for me to avoid a bad back but slightly too long for some of the shorter Barnsdale gardeners, unless they hold them at a slight angle.
Conclusion: All edging shears require sharpening occasionally and may need the nut tightening to keep the blades correctly tensioned, I can’t comment on their extended use wear and tear but my initial experience is that they’re a well-made quality tool which should last for a long time if looked after and maintained; a wipe over with an oily cloth after each use is recommended.
