This fork is designed for loosening, lifting and turning over soil. Digging forks are larger than border forks so well-suited to larger digging jobs, Burgon and Ball also offer border forks and border spades in the BoronGreen range.
My first thought is that the fork looks and feels very strong; I’ve used quite a few different Burgon and Ball tools and they’re all top-quality, so I know that they’ll serve well. Like the digging spade that I reviewed, this fork has a 25 year guarantee which gives me the confidence that it’s a worthy investment.
The fork is 110cm long overall from the top of the handle to the tip of the tines, the head is 28cm long and 18cm wide, it weighs 2.17kg. The Y-shaped ash handle is thermo-treated; Burgon and Ball say this is designed for comfort, increased durability and moisture resistance. The handle and shaft are both made from FSC Certified white ash which is sourced from sustainably managed forests and the Boron steel head is made from 80% recycled steel. The shaft fits into an extra long double-riveted strapped socket on the head which makes the whole fork super-tough and it has been load tested to 100kg which is impressive as the British standard load test is only 55kg. The head is powder coated in a distinctive green colour which helps protect from rust. All coated tools will eventually wear through to the bare metal underneath but I’ve never found that to be a problem, an oily rag on the tines will clear off any surface rust. All in all a very strong and sustainable tool.
I tested the fork to over and weed an area on the allotment, the chickweed is rife at the moment but the fork swiftly worked through it, also on the allotment I used it to lift some winter root vegetables and it worked really well, the tines are pointed and a good thickness (1cm square), some forks I’ve used have tines that are excessively thick but these are about right. I then had a weed and fork through a herbaceous border getting out some stubborn deep rooted weed like hogweed, again the fork did its job well.
Conclusion: I think this is a brilliant tool, quality materials, really comfortable to use and very strong so I highly recommend it, make sure that it’s cleaned after use and stored in a dry place.
